Operating Principles

Counters

The EEPROM on the control board manages the ink system by storing values for the counters described
below.
Protect Counter A
This counter counts the total amount of drained ink. If the counter value exceeds 75,000, a maintenance
error occurs and the current printing job stops. (Refer to Section 1.5.8.) The occurrence of this error requires
EEPROM clearing and waste ink drain pad replacement. (Refer to Section 1.5.1 and Chapter 3.) The current
value for this counter can be found in the default setting mode. (Refer to Section 1.5.2.) To reset the counter,
clear the EEPROM with the control panel or reset using the adjustment program.
Black/Color One-time Flag
This flag, set in the EEPROM, sets a limit to prevent frequent initial ink charging by users. Initial ink charging
is normally performed only when the user begins to use a new printer. It is, however, performed when the
user needs to reinstall an ink cartridge that has been removed to avoid ink leakage before transporting the
printer some distance. The procedure for the initial ink charging for this occasion is as follows:
1. Turn the printer on and remove the ink cartridges.
2. Turn the printer off. The printer starts ejecting ink from the printheads and tubes to the waste ink
drain pads.
3. After transportation, reinstall the ink cartridges.
4. Turn the printer on; the printer will enter the initial ink charging mode.
Ink Consumption Counter
This counter keeps track of the amount of ink used in printing, cleaning, and flushing operations after a new
cartridge is installed. The value is used to monitor how much ink remains in the ink cartridge. The counter
value is reset when the ink cartridge is removed. This counter is normally reset a low ink condition is
detected by the ink end sensor. An Ink End error occurs when the counter exceeds the specified value.
Note: The ink end sensor detects an ink end condition when the remainder of the ink drops to 5 % of the
capacity.
Be sure to replace the waste ink drain pads when the EEPROM is reset. (Refer to Chapter 3.)
