PPC/PMC-8260/DS1
Motorola provides a firmware with the PPC/PMC-8260/DS1 which is executed
immediately after power up. It performs a power-on self-test (POST) and a basic
hardware initialization so that all devices are accessible. If you have created a
driver for the host board with the help of this chapter, it furthermore enables com-
munication between the PMC module and the carrier board.
Code examples are given in the "Code Examples" section on page 4-30.
The firmware offers a number of features:
Execute POST and store POST results in the POST result storage area
Execute application software from boot flash device
Start primary booter to:
– Load application software via PCI bus
– Program application software into the boot flash device
– Read from and write to all devices on the PPC/PMC-8260/DS1
– Obtain detailed results from the power-on self-test to evaluate error condi-
tions
Controlling and monitoring the boot process
The PMC8260/DS1 firmware uses the following resources:
Firmware is stored in the boot flash at offset 100
KByte. This leaves 1.75 MByte for application usage.
Mailbox registers 5, 6 and 7 of the PowerSpan II PCI bridge as control and sta-
tus registers.
Note: In order to avoid firmware malfunction, do not use the mailbox regis-
ters 5, 6 and 7 of the PowerSpan II since they are used by the firmware.
