  • Page 5 A glossary of terms appears at the end of this chapter. The Blom-Singer Adjustable Tracheostoma Valve (ATSV) for hands-free speech is an important element of the Blom-Singer Voice Restoration system. The original tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis was developed by Dr. Eric Blom and Dr. Mark Singer in 1978.

    When used in conjunction with a voice prosthesis, the ATSV eliminates the need for digital stoma occlusion to produce voice. The Blom-Singer Adjustable Tracheostoma Valve should only be used by individuals trained in the use of tracheostomal prosthetic devices. HOW SUPPLIED The Blom-Singer Adjustable Tracheostoma Valve (ATSV) is available in a Starter Kit or as individual components.

The user may choose from one of two housing options: the TruSeal Adhesive Housing or the Tracheostoma Valve Housing.     InHealth relies on the qualified, trained medical professional to instruct patients on the use and care of this device and to provide patients with the Blom-Singer instructions for use supplied with the product. If there are tears, cracks, or structural damage to the device, discontinue use.
  • Page 9 Blom-Singer ® Adjustable Tracheostoma Valve Cleaning Do not use solvents or petroleum-based products for cleaning or lubricating the device. These materials may damage silicone or cause the device to not work properly. Never use facial or toilet tissue to dry the ATSV device as particles of lint or fabric may be deposited onto the device that can be inhaled into the airway upon reinsertion.

Insertion To insert the ATSV, grasp its outer rim and insert it partially into the lower rim of the previously applied tracheostoma housing (diagram 8). Gently push the ATSV until it snaps into place. A properly inserted ATSV will fit squarely inside the housing (diagram 9).
  • Page 11 Blom-Singer ® Adjustable Tracheostoma Valve ATSV Function When properly adjusted, the diaphragm flap valve remains in an open position during normal, quiet breathing and routine physical activity. As the user exhales to speak, the airflow pushes the valve to the closed position to provide an airtight seal during speech.

    If the diaphragm flap valve becomes worn or damaged it may be replaced. A replacement diaphragm/faceplate is available from InHealth. To remove the old diaphragm/faceplate from the ATSV body, insert a coin into the slot located on the side of the ATSV. Gently twist to detach the diaphragm/faceplate from the body.

Disassemble ATSV and thoroughly clean any mucus that may prevent the diaphragm flap valve from completely closing during speech. 2. Replace diaphragm/faceplate if it has become worn or does not work properly.
