console prompt
A prompt used for communication between the system manager and the
computer.
controller
A system component, usually a printed circuit board, that regulates the
operation of one or more peripheral devices.
CPU
Abbreviation for central processing unit. (See central processing unit.)
CRT (cathode ray tube)
A vacuum tube that generates and guides electrons onto a fluorescent screen
to produce characters or graphics. This term is often used to refer to a
monitor.
cursor
A blinking line or figure on the screen that indicates where the next character
the user types will appear.
data
A formal representation of information suitable for communication,
interpretation, and processing by humans or computers.
data transmission
The movement of data in the form of electrical signals along a communications
line.
debug
To detect, locate, and correct errors (bugs) in hardware or software.
device
The general name for any unit connected to the system that is capable of
receiving, storing, or transmitting data. (See input/output (I/O) device and
controller.)
device icon
An icon on the back of the VAXstation 2000 that shows the device that can
be plugged into the connector.
