VALVE PLATE ASSEMBLY
Replacement
Start the engine and adjust the
speed to
800 to
1200 RPM. Turn
the temperature
control
to
Cold
and
the blower to
H
igh
speed
.
Operate in
this manner
fol' from
5 to 10 minutes
to
warm
up
the compressor.
This
will vaporir.e
any liquid
refrigerant
in the
compressor.
Stop
the engine
and turn off
the air conditioning.
Isolate the
compressor
from
the system
by
rotating both valve
stems
clockwise until
they
are
fully seated against
their
seats.
Loosen both
service valve port caps to gradually
bleed the
pressure
from the
compr
essor.
NOTE:
The
discharge sel"vice valve is local.ed
at the condense1'
and
the suction service valve
on the
compreslwr.
Remove the cylinder heads and
the valve
plate assemblies;
scrape
off
all old
particles of
gaskets and
install new valve plates and gas-
kets.
Tighten the
cylinder head
bolts to
20
foot-
pounds
tor
que. Tighten port caps
and
oil filler
plug.
Rotate
both
valve
stems counler-clockwise
until
they
are
f
ully
seated
against
their
seats.
Test
for
leaks and proper
operation.
MAGNETIC CLUTCH
The
Warner
Magnetic Clulch
used
with
the
Copeland
compressor has a stationary type
field
coil. No
br
ushes are used
with
this type
con-
struction.
The
coil
is connected
behveen the
air
conditioning control
switch and a ground. When
the
tem
perature control, and blowe
r
switches
are turned
on, current flows through
the field
coil
and
sets up a
magnetic field. The drive pul-
ley a
r
mature is magncticaiJy attracted
to
the
drive member. The
d
r
iven member is mounted
on the compressor shaft
and rotates with the
driven member, when it is
ma
gnetically
con-
nected to the drive
pulley.
Service to Lhe clutch assembly is limited
to
the
clutch pulley
bear
ing and h ub assembly, and
t
o the field coil and mounting bracket assembly.
CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
Removal
Remove the belts from compressor
drive
pulley,
and
remove
the
self-locking bolt and retaining
95
washer
from the front center of the drive
pulley.
Use a
%
x 18
thread
bolt as a
puller
for
the
drive pulley, by
screwing
it into the drive pulley
hub,
while
supporting
the pulley
to
keep it from
falling when free of shaft.
Disconnect the field coil lead, and remove the
cap screws that attach
the
coil assembly
to
the
compressor, and remove the field coil.
Ins
tallation
I
nstall the
field coil
assembly on the compressor
and
tighten bolts evenly. Connect
field
coil lead.
I
nspect
compr
essor
shaft
and key
for burrs.
Remove all burrs. Line-up key, and install
pulley
assembly on
shaft.
I
nstall retaining washer
and
self-locking bolt. Tighten bolt to 17 to 21
foot-
pounds
tor
que.
Check clearance between field coil housing
and driven member, as
shown
in Figure
3.
T
here
should be
a minimum clearance
of
f
r
om
.010
to
.015 inch all the way around. Where
the
clearance is less than specified, it is probably
due
to misalignment of the coil assembly,
or from
the pulley assembly being cocked on the
com-
p ressor shaft.
Align the
pulley
and
/
or
coil as-
sembly,
and
recheck for proper clearance.

FIELD COIL TEST
Testing
For A Ground
To test fo
r
a g
r
ounded field, remove the field coil
assembly and unsolder the g
r
ound lead from
the
housing. Connect a
n
O-volt
test lamp
from
the
lead
terminal to
the housing;
the
lamp should
not light. Replace the field
coil
assembly if the
test lamp lights. Resoldel'
Lhe field coil ground
lead
,
if the coil tests OK.
