gasket
on end of
vacuum
cylinder,
(Fig.
10). Align
tube and
plate and vacuum
cylinder to
scribe
marks, and
slide
vacuum
hose
on
vacuum tube approximately
%
inch.
Assem-
ble four tube plate attaching
screws. Align air
cleaner
Cover
with
tube plate and replace
re-
maining three screws.
Tighten
all
screws
uni-
formly.
Insert air cleaner
hair
into opening at
th
e
bottom of
the air cleaner cover, using a G
inch
sca
le
or
other similar
tool.
TESTING BRAKE SYSTEM
With the
uni
t completely
assembled and
in-
stalled on vehicle,
make
the
following
vacuum
and hydra
uli
c
leakage
tests.
Operational test

should also be
made to determine that
the
brake
power unit and
hydr
aulic brake system is oper-
ating
up to
standard.
Road test the
car,
make brake applications at
about
20 M.P
.H.
If
the
brake
pedal
has
a
spongy
feel
when the
brakes have been
applied, air is
present
in
the
hydraulic
system and
the lines
must be bled.
Bleed
the
brake
system
at each
wheel cylinder.
With the engine not running, apply
the
brakes
sever al
times
to
exhaust
all
vacuum
in
the system.
Depress
the
brake
pedal, hold
foot
pressure on the pedal, and
start the
engine.
As
soon as
the engine begins
to
operate, the
brake
pedal will
tend to
fall away under foot
pressure
and
less
pressure
will
be required
to
hold the pedal in
the applied
position.
If
there is
NO noticeable
difference
in
the
pedal effect with or
without the
engine
running,
the
vacuum
system
is
not functioning; check
for
a restriction
in the
vacuum
supply line,
re-
striction
on
the air cleaner, faulty pedal adjust-
ments Or faulty
power unit operation.
Stop the
engine
and
ag~.::l
exhaust
all
vac-
uum in
the
system.
Depress
the brake
pedal
and hold foot
pressure
on
the
pedal.
If
the pedal
gradually falls away under foot
press
ure,
the
hydraulic
system is
leaking.
If
the brake
pedal
travels to within
one
inch of the toe board,
the
brake
shoes
require re-adjustment
or
relining.
