Control Strut
(1)
With
the
fuel
tank approximately half full
of gasoline, measure the rear universal
joint angle.
This
angle should be
3
degrees
at zero passenger load.
Reasonable
care
must
be exercised to obtain accurncy in
this
measu
rement.
(2)
If
the measured angle
is
not 3 degrees, cor-
rection
should
be
made
by either adding
or
removing
spacers
between the control
strut
brackets and
the
rear axle brackets. Add-
ing
a

inch spacer
will
reduce
the
meas-
ured
angle about one degree; likewise,
re-
moving a
X
1\
inch
spacer
will
increase
this
angle about one degree.
(3) After the
rear
universal joint angle has
been adjusted as near to 3 degrees as pos-
sible,
measure
the middle
universal
joint
angle.
This
angle
sho

degrees for
a rear
univer
sal joint angle of 3 degrees at
zero passengel· load. The
universal
joint
angle
is
adjusted by adding or
removing
sh ims
between the
center
bearing
cross·
member and center
bearing
insula lor. Add·
ing a
VB
inch shim will increase the middle
universal joint angle about
%
degree; like·
wise, removing a
VII
inch
shim
will
reduce
the angle about
V:I
degree.
(4)
If
a large number of
sh ims
must be added
or removed at the
cenler
bearing, the
rear
universal
j
oint angle
should
be rechecked
lo be uf;sured that
it has not
been uppre·
ciably altered from 3 degrees.
(5) When these adjustments have been made,
the least amount of propeller
shaft
sh
udd er

should
occur ata
loading
of two passengers.
(6)
If
after
road
testing, it
is desirable
to ob·
tain the
least
amount of
propeller shaft
shudde
r at larger
passenger
loading,
the
center bearing must be
raised
slightly
by
means of shimming. Lowering the
center
bearing will move the point of least
shud-
der
to a lower passenger loading.
Whenever the
struts are removed fol'
service,
the
strut eye bolts should be
tightened
to
a
torque of
75
foot-pounds.
These
bushings
should
never be oileo or greased.
Frame
straightening,
aligning and tightening
specifications are the
sa

as indicated
in
the
