and

Regulator
Remove
regulator
cover.
Check
for
the
follow~
ing
conditions:
(1) Loose
or broken connections,
resu lt ing
from
poor
soldering
when previously
serv-
iced, or
rough
handling.
(2) Evidence of burning or abnormal
high
tem-
peratu res
at the
coils, contact
points,
in
su-
lation,
or
the
flexible
arm to which regu-
lator contacts are
mounted.
(3)
Improperly installed armature
springs,
dis-
torted spring
hangers, bent
armatures,
yokes
or
hinges.
(4)
Evidence of moisture or corrosion
in
reg-
ulator.
If
any
of the above conditions are apparent,
or
if
regulator
is
in a generally poor condition,
replace
the
regulator
unit.
Before testiOR the regulator, it
is
absolutely
essential
that the circuit resistance and the
bat-
tery
be tested.
(See
"Starter Circuit
Resist-
ance"
and
"Starter
Current Draw Test.")
Test
the
battery by following the procedure outlined
under
"BATTERY
TESTING." Make all nec-
essary corrections to return the charging sys-
tem
to
normal,
such
as
cleaning
and
tightening
all
loose
connections, generator brackets
and
r
egulator base
screws.
If
the hydrometer test indicates that the bat-
tery is below
1.275
specific gravity, the battery
should be charged.
If
the battery is defective,
it
should be replaced.
This
is necessary when
test-
ing a I'egulator
so
that accurate
test
results
will
be
obtained.
Normalizing Regulator
Temperature
To normalize
regulator temperature, proceed
as
follows:
Connect
a
test ammeter in
series
between the
battery lead and the
regulator
"BAT"
terminal.
Connect a tegt
voltmeter
from
the regulator
"BAT" terminal to ground. Connect a
variable
resistance
across the battery.
Start
t
he
engine. Adjust the engine
speed
to
1,500
rpm
and observe the test ammeter.
Adjust
the variable resistance
to
obtain
a
load of
10
amperes.
Maintain
this
10
ampere
load for
15
minutes in
or
der to normalize
the
regulator temperature with 10 amperes flowing.
NOTE:
When
testing the voltage regulator,
it
is
necessary that the cover be in place
and
