Before testing
the

the
battery
should be
tested. If

circuit resistance and
the
starter
cur-
rent draw
at the same t
ime,
as shown
in
Figure
4.

the
disconnected
lead
and the
positive battery terminal
post.
Connect a test
voltmeter
with
.lO-volt
scale
divisions
from
the
battery posit ive post to the starter
switch
ter·
minal.
Crank
the engine
and
observe
the readings
on
the
voltmeter and the
ammeter. The
voltage
should
not
exceed .12
volt
per
100
amper
es of
current.

I'eading of voltage that
exceeds
.12-volt
per
100
amperes indicates
that
there is high
resist-
ance caused
by a
loose circuit
connection,
de-
fective cable, burnt
switch
contact.'i and, in some
instances,
a short in the
starter
causes
a
voltage
leak.
A
cu rrent
that is high (150 amperes or more)
and is combined with low cranking
speed indi·
cates that the
startcr
should
be removed and
repaired.
A
cunent
that
is low
with
slow
crank-
ing
speed
indicates resistance in
the
starter,
such as
a
burnt comm
utator
and
wor
n brushes.
When
measuring the clearance between the
drive pinion and the drive end housing, press
in
on
the
solenoid
plunger
only.
The
clearance
should be
%2
inch (.078 to .125)
.
Adjust
by
screwing
the plunger
screw
in
or
out as re·
quired.

the
starter
after
removal,
refer to
Figure
3
for
pr
oper arrangement
of
parts.
Bench
tests are made in the
same
manner
as
ou
tlined
in
the
D-15431
Service Manual.
