Testing
For
A
Shorted Field Coil
Disconnect
the lead wire. Connect a Carbon Pile
Rheostat
across the
battery
(l,OOO-watts or
more).
Connect a test ammeter
(0
to 10 amps)
in
series with the disconnected field lead and
the
battery
positive post. Adj ust
t
he battery voltage
to
12-volts with the Rheostat and read the am-
perage
flowing through the field
coil.
The field
current
draw at 12-volts
should
be
2 amperes.
AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM
PERFORMANCE TEST
To
quickly
determine whether the ai
r
condition-
ing
system is performing satisfactorily, proceed
as
follows:
Place thermometers over
the
return and dis-
charge
air
grilles; close fresh air doors; close
all
windows
and
the
cowl ventilator; open the
su
mmer
ventilation
doors.
Operate
the
engine
at 1200 RPM with
the
temperature
control
switch
turned
to the cold-
est
position
and the blower to high
speed.
Operate
the car
heater to obtain a return air
temperature
of 80
0
to 85
0
F. Operate in this
manner for
a
few minutes to obtai
n
a balanced
condition.
Check
the
temperature
readings
of
both ther-
96
mometers.
If
the
a
ir
conditioning
system
is
functioning properly and there is a temperature
of
80
0
to
85
0
F., at the
return
air
grille;
the
temperature
at the
discharge
grille
should be
at
least 24
0
lower.
Tu
rn
the
blower switch to alI three positions,
checking the velocity and volume of air at the
discharge
grille.
There should be a
good
volume
of
air and a noticeable change in the velocity as
the blower
speed
is
var
ied.
QUICK COOL DOWN OF CAR
To provide a means fo
r
a quick
cool
down
of
the
cur
interior,
the wiring to the
temperature con·
trol switch
has been
changed from
the
"LOW"
terminal
on the blower
switch to the
" Bat" ter·
minal as
shown
in Figure 4.
This
change
in the wiring connection
allows
t
he tempenlture
contr
ol switch to be turned
on
to provide operation of the air conditioning
sys·
tern, with out
the
blowers being turned
on,
as
was
pr
eviously necessary.
Operation For
Quick
Cool Down
Open
a
ll car windows and
tUrn
temper
ature
contr
ol knob
(outer
ri
ng) to "COLD"
.
Start
engine and drive
car
several blocks to expel hot
air f rom car
interior,
then
close all windows and
turn
blower
control
knob
to
"HIG H".
