gain reduction. Do not confuse this with the reverse exponential characteristic trig-
gered by setting the 2B R
control to E
. In this case, release
S
ELEASE
HAPE
XPONENTIAL
commences slowly and then speeds up as it progresses.
The 2B B
control is only active when the 2B R
S
control is set to
REAKPOINT
ELEASE
HAPE
.
L
INEAR
Compression-induced audio density remains constant when the gain reduction is
above the 2B B
setting. When the gain reduction is below the 2B
REAKPOINT
B
setting, density decreases proportionally to the amount of gain reduc-
REAKPOINT
tion.
For example, if the 2B B
is set to 10
, the release rate (in dB/second) will
REAKPOINT
DB
be constant when the gain reduction is above 10 dB. Between 10 dB and 0 dB gain
reduction, the release rate will slow down more and more.
The calibration of the B
controls is only accurate when K
= 0 dB and/or
REAKPOINT
NEE
= infinity:1 — i.e., when the compression ratio is essentially infinite. When the
R
ATIO
ratio is less than infinite, the effective breakpoint of the compressor will be lower
than 2B B
setting.
REAKPOINT
The main use of the 2B B
control is to prevent the compressor from objec-
REAKPOINT
tionably increasing audio density when using low compression ratios and a signifi-
cant amount of gain reduction—for example, 10 dB. The 2B B
control is
REAKPOINT
best adjusted by ear. If you find that density increases too much as gain reduction
increases, lower the 2B B
control's setting. If you want more density at
REAKPOINT
high amounts of gain reduction, increase the 2B B
control's setting. 10 dB
REAKPOINT
is a good starting point for setting this control.
Loudness Threshold sets the maximum subjective loudness allowed by the process-
ing with reference to the input of the 1101's MB look-ahead limiter. (See Loudness
Control on page 3-14.) Note that starting in V 3.1, 10 dB was added to the displayed
value of the CBS loudness controller threshold so that the default value is displayed
as "0 dB" instead of "–10 dB." In other words, a displayed value of "0 dB" produces
the same amount of loudness controller gain reduction as "–10 dB" did in previous
software versions. Because this is a display change only, all User and Factory presets
will sound the same as they did in previous versions except for the effect of the
"BS.1770 Safety Limiter" (see above) if this is activated
Loudness Controller Attack: See Loudness Control on page 3- 14.
Loudness Controller Bass Couple: See Loudness Control on page 3- 14.
BS.1770 Threshold: See BS.1770 Safety Limiter on page 3-17.
