Forward Gear

1. Inspect forward gear teeth for rust, chipping, ex-
cessive wear (teeth are sharped edged), or bro-
ken teeth.
2. Inspect forward gear clutch jaws for wear.
Rounded jaws indicate the following:
a. Improper shift cable adjustment.
b. Engine idle speed too high.
c. Shifting too slowly.
3. Inspect propeller shaft forward gear bearing sur-
face to determine condition of forward gear
needle bearing. If bearing surface is discolored
(from lack of lubricant), pitted or worn, propeller
shaft and bearing should be replaced.

4. Use a suitable mandrel to press needle bearing
out of forward gear.

5. Use Driver 91-826872 to press new needle bear-
ing into forward gear. Press on numbered side of
bearing.
