9. Tighten the four screws to secure the new heat sink and fan assembly in the following sequence. Do
not over-tighten the screws.
a. Partially tighten screw
b. Partially tighten screw
10. Connect the heat sink and fan assembly cable to the microprocessor fan connector on the system
board. See "Parts on the system board" on page 37.
11. Position the heat sink fan duct over the new heat sink and fan assembly. Then, press the heat sink fan
duct straight down until it snaps into position.

Replacing the microprocessor

Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Chapter
1 "Read this first: Important safety information" on page 1.
CAUTION:
The heat sink and microprocessor might be very hot. Before you open the computer cover, turn off
the computer and wait several minutes until the computer is cool.
To replace the microprocessor, do the following:
1. Remove any media from the drives and turn off all connected devices and the computer. Then,
disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the
computer.
2. Remove the computer cover. See "Removing the computer cover" on page 88.
3. Remove the heat sink and fan assembly. See "Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly" on page 123.
Note: Place the heat sink and fan assembly on its side so that the thermal grease on the bottom
does not touch anything.
4. Locate the microprocessor. See "Computer components" on page 32.
5. Disconnect all cables connected to the system board.
