Setting the
PolaSharp values
4-8
The numbers used by the Sharpening Threshold, Sharpening
Limit, and Smoothing Threshold sliding bars all represent the
standard deviation between the center pixel and its neighbors.
These numbers are a measure of the pixel to pixel variation or
edginess of an image.
PolaSharp allows you to gain an understanding these numbers
by observing the standard deviation of areas within your
image. You can then use the displayed values to set the sliders
to appropriate values. To view the standard deviation num-
bers:
Click Windows Palette on the Photoshop menu bar and then
1
select Show Info on the pop-up menu.
Select the image you want to sharpen.
2
Click Filter, Sharpen and select PolaSharp CS-500 PtP. . . to
3
bring up the PolaSharp dialog box.
Hold the Shift and Option keys down while clicking the
4
Sharpen button. This will bring up a monochrome image in
which the pixel values represent the degree of edginess.
You can now move the cursor within the monochrome image
5
and view the standard deviation numbers which are displayed
as the RGB values within the Show Info window.
Based on the values you see in the Show Info window, you
6
can determine the pixel variation present in specific parts of
your image, and thus determine the variation present in an
area you want to smooth or sharpen.
