The Brightness, Contrast and Exposure (BCE) tool changes
the brightness, contrast, and exposure setting of the entire
image.
Brightness is the balance of light and dark shades in an image,
while contrast is the range between the darkest and lightest
shades in the image. On the other hand, exposure works like
the exposure feature in photography, allowing you to change
exposure of the image by increasing or reducing available light
to the image. The Exposure control is a scanner hardware-
related feature, and using it correctly can allow more detail to
emerge in an image, especially if it was underexposed.
The goal in using the BCE tool is to get the fullest dynamic
range possible for your image. Because the BCE tool affects
the image as a whole, you can try using the Shadows and
Highlights tool instead to get the effects you want if you find
that the BCE tool alters your image too much.
