When this scan operation is initiated, the microcontroller on the main controller PC board coordinates all the slide scanner's electronic systems in digitizing, color-correcting and sharpening the image, then transmitting it to the host's memory (Figure 2-1).

Slide Scanner Repair Manual Functional Description Scanner Transporter The slide scanner transporter system consists of a 35 mm transparency holder, a transporter stepper motor and a photo-sensor located on the front of the main controller PC board. Upon command from the microcontroller, the transporter system drives the 35 mm transparency being scanned through the scanner's illuminated scanning area while the lamp and optics projects and focuses the image line-by-line onto the CCD sensor on the image sensor PC board.

Slide Scanner Repair Manual Functional Description Main Controller PC Board Power Distribution The main controller PC board contains voltage regulators that are used to power the RGB reference circuitry and the slide scanner's cooling fan. Table 2-1 shows function of each voltage regulator.
Slide Scanner Repair Manual Functional Description AC Inverter PC Board The AC inverter PC board generates the necessary AC voltage to power the slide scanner's lamp. It consists of a switching inverter network (Q1 and Q2), a transformer (T1), and a lamp. Refer to simplified block diagram (Figure 2-4) and the AC inverter PC board schematic in Section 6 of this Repair Manual when reading the description of the AC inverter PC board.

It has built in dark reference pixels and independently addressable horizontal clocks. Lines of red, green, and blue image data are acquired simultaneously and clocked out sequentially in an order determined by the specified application.

It also contains three individually controlled sample-and-hold amplifiers and two 3-to-1 multiplexers which facilitate dark level adjustment and white balance correction.

In the event that the scanned image requires less than full buffer capacity, the FIFO buffer will be used for preview purposes as well, and may be re-transferred out, through the color correction circuitry multiple times to preview the effects of the post-processing.
Slide Scanner Repair Manual Functional Description Color Modes The main controller PC board nominally delivers 24-bit color to the host computer. Also available is an 8-bit gray scale and 8-bits with selectable drop-out color. Gray data is provided in the form of a luminance signal derived from the RGB triplets. Scan times are identical to full color scans at the same resolution, but SCSI data rates are 1/3 the rate of the same scan in 24-bit color.
Slide Scanner Repair Manual Functional Description Filter Wheel Driver The main controller PC board provides a filter wheel driver that receives signals from the microcontroller. These signals directly drive the filter wheel stepper motor to its applicable position during scanning and calibration. A photo-sensor (U 4) provides the reference for properly positioning the filter wheel.

Before performing any of the procedures described in this section , make sure that the slide scanner has been turned off and that the power cord has been disconnected. To prevent any chance of electric shock, the slide scanner's housing should only be opened by a qualified service person, and only after the slide scanner has been disconnected from its power source.

In our example this is -0.04 pixels which is within the spec of 0.64 pixels. The test result is the vertical offset caused by the fixed lead screw pitch.

Slide Scanner Repair Manual Diagnostics and Troubleshooting Dark Noise II Test The dark noise test analyses the statistical and fourier noise patterns in a scanned image of the dark calibration target in the scanner. The dark calibration target is the back of the scanner’s carriage.
Slide Scanner Repair Manual Diagnostics and Troubleshooting Part two of this test checks for the min or max variation from the dark set point. Any single pixel which deviates a large amount from the calibrated dark is expected to produce a streak.
Slide Scanner Repair Manual Diagnostics and Troubleshooting Dark Uniformity Response (Fourier) Part three of the test checks for fixed frequency sources of noise in the dark response. Fixed frequency sources tend to create highly objectionable artifacts such as streaks and diagonal lines.

When run as a stand-alone test, the program will ask for the location of the test constants file, so that the same limits can be used in the stand-alone as in the standard test.

These profiles are tested to find potential borderline calibration problems which might cause problems in the field once the lamp ages slightly or is replaced. Pixels flagged as “bad pixels” in the normal calibration are ignored in the uniformity analysis.

Dust is identified as deviations from a polynomial curve fit to the illumination profile that exceed the Fine_uniformity_tolerance set in the constants file (initially at 9%). Failure of this test will occur for a single violation of the threshold, and will generally require removal and cleaning of the CCD sensor.

The dark performance of the CCD is tightly specified and tested due to the limited correction range of the SprintScan 35ES.
