    Slide Scanner Repair Manual Scanner Overview Description This section of the Repair Manual gives an overview of the SprintScan 35, the SprintScan 35 ES, and the SprintScan 35 PLUS slide scanner. It only provides the necessary information pertaining to features and specifications for each slide scanner. For detailed information pertaining to setting up the slide scanner, installing and starting their software, assigning SCSI ID's and checking SCSI connections, scanning transparencies, and using application software, refer to the applicable slide scanner User Guide.

    Slide Scanner Repair Manual Functional Description Scanner Process Overview Upon command from the host computer, a scan operation is initiated. When this scan operation is initiated, the microcontroller on the main controller PC board coordinates all the slide scanner's electronic systems in digitizing, color-correcting and sharpening the image, then transmitting it to the host's memory (Figure 2-1).

    Slide Scanner Repair Manual Functional Description Scanner Transporter The slide scanner transporter system consists of a 35 mm transparency holder, a transporter stepper motor and a photo-sensor located on the front of the main controller PC board. Upon command from the microcontroller, the transporter system drives the 35 mm transparency being scanned through the scanner's illuminated scanning area while the lamp and optics projects and focuses the image line-by-line onto the CCD sensor on the image sensor PC board.

    Slide Scanner Repair Manual Functional Description Main Controller PC Board Power Distribution The main controller PC board contains voltage regulators that are used to power the RGB reference circuitry and the slide scanner's cooling fan. Table 2-1 shows function of each voltage regulator.

    Slide Scanner Repair Manual Functional Description AC Inverter PC Board The AC inverter PC board generates the necessary AC voltage to power the slide scanner's lamp. It consists of a switching inverter network (Q1 and Q2), a transformer (T1), and a lamp. Refer to simplified block diagram (Figure 2-4) and the AC inverter PC board schematic in Section 6 of this Repair Manual when reading the description of the AC inverter PC board.

    Figure 2-5. Image Sensor PC board CCD Image Sensor The CCD image sensor is Polaroid's custom 4000 element tri-linear (RGB) time-delay integration device. It has built in dark reference pixels and independently addressable horizontal clocks. Lines of red, green, and blue image data are acquired simultaneously and clocked out sequentially in an order determined by the specified application.

    Slide Scanner Repair Manual Functional Description Analog Signal Processing The VSP (Figure 2-5) contains a preamplifier with voltage controlled gain, a correlated double sampler with offset adjustment, and an output amplifier. It also contains three individually controlled sample-and-hold amplifiers and two 3-to-1 multiplexers which facilitate dark level adjustment and white balance correction.

    Slide Scanner Repair Manual Functional Description Color Modes The main controller PC board nominally delivers 24-bit color to the host computer. Also available is an 8-bit gray scale and 8-bits with selectable drop-out color. Gray data is provided in the form of a luminance signal derived from the RGB triplets. Scan times are identical to full color scans at the same resolution, but SCSI data rates are 1/3 the rate of the same scan in 24-bit color.

    Slide Scanner Repair Manual Calibration and Adjustments Adjustments Power Supply Note: The +15 Vdc and -15 Vdc voltages are dependent on the load that is being drawn on the +5 Vdc line. To make sure that the operating voltage are properly set, the +5 Vdc power supply voltage must be adjusted to +5.0 +/- 0.1 Vdc.

    Slide Scanner Repair Manual Calibration and Adjustments Focus and Magnification Initial Test Setup To perform a focus adjustment, the slide scanner video signal processor (VSP) must be turned on. Normally, it shuts down 15 minutes after initial power-up if the slide scanner is not in use. To keep the VSP turned on, perform the following steps.

Setup the dual trace oscilloscope as follows: • Time Base - 200 usec/div • Amplitude - 500 mv/div 2. Connect the dual trace oscilloscope to the applicable main controller board test points (Figure 3-5) as follows: Note: Figure 3-6 displays the RGB raw output of the VSP before the focus target is inserted in the light path.

Note: Figure 3-8 displays an expanded Red waveform after the target is inserted. The oscilloscope time base settings are adjusted to view only the Red portion of the VSP output.
