The States

IPDS–capable printers are known as "state machines." As the printer
recognizes a specific command, it moves to the state identified with that
command.
Home State
Block States
Page State
Overlay State
Page Segment State
Font State
Any State

Introduction
The initial operating state. The printer returns to this
state after a page, an overlay, a page segment, or a
downloaded font has been sent.
The printer establishes the processing conditions for
a data block to be accepted. There are three block
states: IM image, graphics, and bar code.
While printing a logical page, the printer is in the
Page State.
This state permits overlay data blocks to be stored.
Page segment data is stored when the printer is in
this state.
This state occurs when the printer is reading coded
font data.
Some commands can be received in any state.
can operate as IPDS and non–IPDS SCS printers and must first be
switched to IPDS to use the above states.
