OceanFlyer is equipped with an
extensive array of electronic equipment,
including several redundant systems.
Below is a brief summary of these
systems. For details of their operation,
consult the manuals found in the
electronics file and on the iPad.
4H1: Electronics: Autopilot
The boat is equipped with a Garmin GHC 20 Autopilot
System. There is a control head in the eyebrow above the
lower helm. The autopolit can also be controlled on the
Garmin Multifunction displays at both the lower and upper
helms.
There are instructions on board in the Garmin Owner's
Manual and on the iPad.
IIn addtion, there is a Garmin tips and hints section in this Blue Book
with many of the most used functions and the less well documented
features described.
There are also videos on the iPad covering many of the same toipics.
A unique feature of the Garmin autopilot is what they call SHADOW
DRIVE. When in either HEADING HOLD or FOLLOW ROUTE
mode, you can take control of the boat simply by turing the helm in
whichever direction you wish to steer. This is ideal for missing a crab
pot or log that suddenly comes into view. When you stop turning the
helm and hold a steady corse, the autopilot will re-engage in
HEADING HOLD. IIt will not automatically return to FOLLOW
ROUTE mode after Shadow Drive it activated. That you will need to
do in the normal manner.
Maintain a careful lookout when using the autopilot! It is an aid to
comfortable cruising, not a replacement for an aware helmsperson!
Remember, you can disengage it quickly simply by pushing "STBY"!
