4F1: AC Generator
The ship's two Onan Generators provide 20,000 watts
(Generator "1') and 9,000 watts (Generator "2") of AC power to the
vessel and are used for battery charging, cooking, heating hot water, the
washer/dryer, all air conditioning, and operation of incidental AC
appliances.
The generators are in the engine room. Service access is
through the doors on the aft E/R bulkhead on the front of the 20kw
enclosure, or by lifting the shelf atop the fuel manifold and tipping the
complete manifold assembly forward out of the way to reach the 9kW
unit.
More important is checking the sea strainers (see 4.49) to be
sure they have not accumulated debris while the generators were run
for extended periods, particularly at anchor.
Generator Selection:
Before starting either generator, determine which you will need.
Unless you are using several of the high-consumption appliances (the stove, the air
conditioning, the Dryer, the water heater, and the watermaker), you most likely will only need the 9,000
watt generator, #2! (You have a guide to evaluation of required wattages on page 4.15 of this manual.)

Generator Control Panel:

The Generator Control Panel is in the lower left corner of the AC Breaker
Panel at the lower helm. Here, each generator has three control push buttons and
a control voltage circuit breaker.
The upper row is for the 20 kW generator; the lower row is for the 9 kW
generator.
Starting a Generator:
1) For the chosen generator, make sure the circuit breaker under the buttons is "On".
2) Press and hold the "HEATER" button for 10-15 seconds..
3) Release the "Heater" button and press the "START" button for the selected generator.
The selected generator should start within 5-10 seconds of depressing the
button.
If it does not start, try steps "1" - "3" one more time ONLY, and if it still doesn't
start after this second try, see "Generator Problems" below!
