Check the drive belt, see page 188. If the
belt is damaged, the engine may overheat,
the battery may not be charged, the A/C
compressor may not work and power assist-
ance for the steering (diesel-engined cars)
may be lost.
Always connect the positive (red) cable to
the positive (+) battery terminal, and the
negative (black) cable to the negative (-)
battery terminal. Remove both battery
cables when rapid-charging the battery.
NOTICE
• Do not connect the battery termi-
nals, + and –, incorrectly.
• Serious damage can be done to the
car's electrical system if a battery or
alternator lead is disconnected while
the engine is running.
• Cars with petrol engine: exercise spe-
cial care when removing and fitting the
positive (+) cable so as not to damage
the battery disconnect switch 3.
A car with standard equipment specifica-
tions and a fully charged battery can be left
for up to 40 days and still have a sufficient
charge for starting. If extra equipment is
fitted, such as a mobile phone, the charge
may only be sufficient for about 15 days.
Turn the two retainers a quarter turn to
unlock the battery cover
1.9TiD and 1.9 TTiD with fuel-driven
heater has a larger battery and conse-
quently no battery cover.
