Starting and driving
Important information
concerning diesel-engined cars
NOTICE
• Only use diesel fuel. Diesel engines
must be run on diesel fuel that fulfils
the EN590 European standard. Do not
use RME fuel, sometimes also called
rape diesel, as this fuel will damage
components in the fuel system.
• Petrol in the fuel damages the fuel
system. Do not drive the car if petrol
has been filled by mistake. The com-
plete fuel system must be drained and
flushed with diesel fuel.
• Do not use additives.
• Even if the car has a fuel filter with
water trap, diesel fuel that may have
high water content should be avoided.
High sulphur content should also be
avoided.
The following applies to diesel
cars with particle filter 3
The particle filter is a component part of the
exhaust system. There are small particles in
diesel exhaust fumes which are trapped in
the particle filter. The filter is regenerated
(the particles are combusted) at regular
intervals.
Regeneration occurs automatically. The
time between each regeneration is affected
by the type of traffic the car is driven in.
Motorway driving results in the longest inter-
vals. A regeneration can take up
to 8 minutes.
Regeneration starts when certain condi-
tions are met, e.g.: the engine must have
been running for at least 5 minutes (in cold
weather conditions, for up to 15 minutes),
the speed must be at least 25 km/h.
If the car is only driven shorter distances,
regeneration will not start. To prevent this,
it is recommended that you drive
for 20 minutes on the motorway
every 1000 km. Regeneration will then be
carried out.
When the filter is regenerated it may seem
that the engine is temporarily weaker.
During town driving for example, the engine
may seem sluggish during acceleration
which is preceded by engine braking. This
is least noticeable during highway driving.
If regeneration is not activated, the following
message is shown on the DIC:
Particulate filter full.
See Owner´s manual.
Drive on the main roads for at
least 20 minutes, otherwise the Check
Engine light will come on when the filter is
full and the car will continue to run in Limp-
home mode (the car can be driven but with
limited performance). The car must then be
checked immediately by a workshop.
A manual regeneration check can then be
carried out. We recommend that you con-
tact an authorised Cadillac workshop.
NOTICE
• When regeneration is under way the
temperature in the whole exhaust
system rises. For this reason, never
park in a way that inflammable mate-
rial may come into contact with the
exhaust system.
• It is important that the exhaust system
is in good condition. If the exhaust
system leaks then hot exhaust gases
may flow against the underside of the
car and cause damage.
• Use a genuine Cadillac exhaust
system, which is designed to with-
stand the temperature increase that
occurs during regeneration.
