Starting and driving
Cars with diesel engine 3
At very low temperatures, you may need to
run the starter motor for up to 60 seconds.
Allow the engine to idle for
about 10 seconds. Do not apply full throttle
for at least 2–3 minutes after starting.
To facilitate starting when coolant tempera-
ture is low, and to reduce exhaust emis-
sions, there is a preheater plug in every cyl-
inder. The indicator light "Indicator, glow
plug (cars with diesel engine)" comes on
when the remote control is turned to
position 3 if coolant temperature is
below +5 °C, see page 67.
How long the glow filament operates
depends on the coolant temperature.
At +4 °C it will be engaged for
about 1 second, while at –20 °C it will be
engaged for about 10 seconds.
Starting in cold climates (diesel engines)
If the car is to be used in a cold climate for
an extended period of time, we recommend
the use of an engine heater.
At very low temperatures (below –25 °C),
run the starter motor until the engine is run-
ning at about 1,000 rpm under its own
power.
Even if you detect the beginnings of ignition
after only a few seconds, it may be neces-
sary to run the starter motor a good deal
longer to get the engine running by itself.
You may need to run the starter motor for up
to 60 seconds. Refer also to "Driving in cold
climates" on page 160.
Petrol engine designed for E85 3
When the temperature is about 0 °C or
lower
• If possible, use the engine heater
– When starting from cold between –10
and –20 °C the engine heater should be
engaged for about 1 hr. before starting.
If the temperature is considerably lower
than –20 °C then the engine heater
should be engaged considerably longer
before starting.
– Using the engine heater at temperatures
above –10 °C is good for the environ-
ment and for fuel consumption.
• If the engine heater cannot be used
– When the temperature is about –10 °C
or lower then a greater proportion of
petrol should be used to avoid the car
being more difficult to start.
Starting in hot weather
• Start the engine in the normal way.
