An Ethernet network that uses 50-ohm thin coaxial cable is limited to 185 meters
per segment.
Bridge
A device that connects two local-area networks (LANs), or two segments of the
same LAN. The two LANs being connected can be alike or dissimilar. For example,
a bridge can connect an Ethernet with a Token-Ring network.
CHAP (Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol)
A type of security that prevents unauthorized access by identifying the remote end.
COM Port
A computer's serial communications port used to transmit to and receive data from
a DCE device like a modem. The modem connects directly to this port.
Compression
A method of providing the original information using fewer bits of information.
Console Port
The interface standard used in Tainet's WANpro 2000 Device. It supports the
asynchronous communication protocol to be applied to talk to the COM Port
device.
DCE (Data Communications Equipment)
The equipment that provides the functions required to establish, maintain, and end
a connection. It also provides the signal conversion required for communication
between the DTE and the network.
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
The non-loaded, local-loop copper connection between the customer and the first
node within the network.
DTE (Data Terminal Equipment)
The equipment, such as a computer or terminal, that provides data in the form of
digital signals for transmission.
Ethernet
A type of network that supports high-speed communication among systems. It is a
widely-implemented standard for LANs. All hosts are connected to a coaxial cable
where they contend for network access using a Carrier Sense, Multiple Access
with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) paradigm.
