Troubleshooting and Using the Trace Facility
Requires that the shadow trace file be manually created as an entry-sequenced file
prior to use
Has limited report-formatting features
Is difficult to transfer as an e-mail attachment or using file-transfer mechanisms
A new unstructured format shadow trace file has the following characteristics:
Is supported only by FASTPTCP
Is automatically created by FASTPTCP
Uses SHAP, an offline formatting program
Is easy to transfer as an e-mail attachment or using file-transfer mechanisms
Contains new trace records not available with the original trace file format
To use the trace facility to obtain trace information for a device requires:
1. Creating the shadow trace file (or files) for a device using FUP.
Note. This step is not required for FASTPTCP if the new unstructured format is to be
used.
2. Configuring the shadow trace file name (or file names) in the FASTCNFG file
associated with the device.
3. Enabling tracing for the device by setting bits 1 and 5 (%42000 or 17408) in the
Spoolcom DEV PARM attribute. These bits turn the tracing facility on and instruct
the FASTP network print process to read the FASTCNFG file to determine the
trace file name(s).
4. Beginning with the G06.10 and D48.02 releases, you can optionally set bit 5 of the
Spoolcom PRINT PARM attribute to extend shadow trace files for FASTPTCP
processes only. Setting this bit allows shadow trace information for multiple jobs to
accumulate in the shadow file.
Tracing for a device can be enabled or disabled at any time.

Creating Trace Files

To create an entry-sequenced shadow trace file, enter the following FUP command:
FUP CREATE $volume.subvolume.filename, TYPE E, REC 4000, 
EXT (n,n)
where:
$volume.subvolume.file
specifies the name to be assigned to the shadow trace file.
