Considerations for FASTPNOV

Session Considerations

For a FASTPNOV print process, a Spooler device represents a NetWare print queue.
To communicate with a NetWare print server on behalf of a print queue, the
FASTPNOV print process communicates with a specific IPXPROTO IOP, which in turn
communicates with the print server.
To communicate with an IPXPROTO IOP, the FASTPNOV print process must open
(that is, start a session with) and close (that is, end the session with) the IOP.
Rather than starting a session with the IOP for each device, the FASTPNOV print
process:
Starts a session with the IOP when the first device using the IOP is started.
Ends a session with the IOP only after all of the devices using the IOP have been
stopped.

Effect on Error Recovery

If recovering from an error condition requires that a device be stopped, in the sense
that the FASTPNOV print process must end a session with the IOP, then all of the
devices using the IOP must be stopped before the session with the IOP can be ended.
To ensure that the print process ends the session with the IOP:
1. Change the status of any jobs that are affected to stop all device activity, usually by
changing the job status of jobs in the READY state to the HOLD state.
2. Drain any devices that use the IOP with the Spooler EXCLUSIVE ON attribute
specified.
3. Perform any other error recovery required.
4. Start all devices.

Effect on User ID and Password

Because there is only one session between a FASTPNOV print process and an
IPXPROTO IOP, all the devices (each representing a print queue) using the IOP must
use the same user ID (USERID attribute) and password (PASSWORD attribute).
These attributes are defined in the DEVICE entry in the FASTCNFG configuration file
and must also be defined for the corresponding NetWare print server.
