Operating modes and functions

The SIMOCRANE ESSM Step 7 library differentiates between operating modes and functions.
3.2.1.1

Operating modes

SIMOCRANE ESSM offers the following operating modes for implementing the applications
listed in the section Description (Page 21).
Black start
The "Black Start" operating mode serves to precharge an uncharged SINAMICS DC link from the
battery and to control the DC link. The SINAMICS DCPs take on the role of a regenerative supply
unit in this case. Excess energy is extracted from the DC link and transferred to the battery. An
energy deficiency in the DC link is compensated by extracting energy from the battery. The DC
link voltage setpoint can be specified. An AC island grid can be set up from the DC link controlled
by SIMOCRANE ESSM using an "Active Line Module" (ALM) to create the grid, for example. This
makes it possible to operate independently of the line supply. The specified charge and discharge
power limit is not exceeded. See Function Manual - Line Supply Infeed
support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/en/view/109782591).
Manual Charge and Discharge
The "Manual Charge and Discharge" operating mode serves to charge the battery from the line
supply/charging station. A power setpoint for charging and discharging is entered in the energy
storage system for this purpose. When the "Charge" or "Discharge" command is issued, the
SINAMICS DC link is charged or discharged based on the specified setpoint. If neither the charge
nor the discharge command is active and the energy storage system is switched on, the power
converters switch to standby mode for energy efficiency reasons.
Fully automatic peak shaving
With fully automatic "Peak Shaving", the energy storage system autonomously detects and
compensates for an energy deficiency or excess in the SINAMICS DC link. This regulation takes
place within the capabilities of the energy storage system. When the power balance has
returned to normal, the energy storage system switches to standby mode.
