Do not use the HOLD function on steep down-
R
hill or uphill gradients with slippery or loose
surfaces.
Driving on sand
When driving on sand, also observe the following
instructions:
Select a higher vehicle level.
R
Shift to a lower gear.
R
Drive quickly to overcome the rolling resist-
R
ance; the vehicle may otherwise dig itself in.
Drive in the tracks of other vehicles if possi-
R
ble. Make sure that the following prerequisites
are met:
the tyre ruts are not too deep
-
the sand is firm enough
-
the ground clearance is sufficient
-
Fording
Also observe the following information when ford-
ing:
Vehicles with AIRMATIC: select the highest
R
possible vehicle level (
page 284).
/
Drive no faster than 10 km/h.
R
Observe the maximum permissible depth for
R
driving through water (
page 452).
/
Switch off automatic climate control
R
(
page 165).
/
Vehicles with stationary heater/ventilation:
R
switch the stationary heater/ventilation off
(
page 173).
/
Ensure that a bow wave does not form as you
R
drive.
Do not stop in the water and do not switch off
R
the engine. Ensure the ECO start/stop func-
tion is switched off (
page 191).
/
Driving in mountainous terrain
Also observe the following information when driv-
ing in mountainous terrain:
Observe the values of the approach/depar-
R
ture angle and the maximum gradient-climbing
ability (
page 452).
/
Avoid high engine speeds.
R
Use the braking power of the engine when
R
driving downhill.
Driving and parking 189
Shift to a lower gear on uphill gradients and on
R
long, steep downhill gradients.
Activate DSR before driving downhill, if neces-
R
sary (
page 257).
/
Check-list after driving off-road
Driving off-road places greater demands on your
vehicle than driving on normal roads. Check the
entire vehicle for damage and foreign bodies
every time after driving off-road. Foreign bodies in
the wheels or drivetrain can lead to imbalances
and therefore vibrations.
If the F driving mode is selected: select
R
another driving mode.
Deactivate DSR.
R
Lower the vehicle level again to a level suitable
R
to the road conditions, e.g. to the normal
level.
Apply the brakes to dry them after fording.
R
Check that the service brake is working nor-
R
mally after a long downhill stretch.
Clean the following components every time
R
after driving off-road:
