Preparing the system for operation after removing and replacing the
expanded function system backplane
Use this procedure to prepare the system for operation after removing and replacing the expanded
function system backplane.
To prepare the system for operation, complete the following steps:
1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap on and that the ESD clip is
connected to an unpainted metal surface. If not, do so now. Do not remove the ESD wrist strap until
you are told to do so later in this procedure.
2. Replace the service access cover. For instructions, see "Installing the service access cover on a
5148-21L, 5148-22L, 8247-21L, 8247-22L, 8247-42L, 8284-21A, 8284-22A, 8286-41A, or 8286-42A
system" on page 142.
3. Reseat the solid-state drives into their slots. For instructions, see Replacing a disk drive or solid-state

4. Reseat the disk drives into their slots. For instructions, see Replacing a disk drive or solid-state drive

5. Replace the Slimline media device (DVD). For instructions, see Replacing a Slimline media device

6. Replace the control panel. For instructions, see Replacing the control panel with the power off
(http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/POWER8/p8hbc/

7. For a rack-mounted system, place the system into the operating position. For instructions, see
"Placing the rack-mounted system into the operating position" on page 150.
8. Replace the power supplies. For instructions, see Replacing the power supply with the power turned
off (http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/POWER8/p8hbd/
p8hbd_82x_84x_reppowersupplyoff.htm).
9. Reconnect external cables to the system.
10. Reconnect the power cords to the system. For instructions, see "Connecting the power cords to the
system" on page 157.
11. Remove the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap.
12. When the service processor comes up to the standby state (the power-on LED on the control panel is
flashing slowly), continue to the next step.
13. Restore network connectivity.
The service processor must connect to the network to be accessible from the management console.
How will the IP address of the service processor be managed?
v If the IP address is automatically obtained from a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
server, go to the next step.
v If the IP address is manually configured as a static IP address, go to step 15 on page 105.
14. Enable network access to the service processor.
If the network connection uses the DHCP to establish an IP address, and uses the Management
consoles as the DHCP server, no additional configuration is necessary to enable network access to
the service processor. Perform the following steps:
a. Ensure that the service processor is connected to the existing service network by verifying that
the management console cable is connected to the management console port on the system
backplane.
b. If not already connected, connect all system power cables by plugging them into power outlets.
