13.6 Software upgrade

The system upgrade process involves the upgrading of your entire IBM Flex System V7000
Storage Node environment. The amount of time can vary depending on the amount of
preparation work required and the size of the environment. In our lab we allowed ourselves an
hour but would suggest a time of around 2.5 hours.

13.6.1 Choosing an upgrade method

Before you upgrade, become familiar with the prerequisites and tasks involved. Decide
whether you want to upgrade automatically or upgrade manually. During an automatic
upgrade procedure, the clustered system upgrades each of the nodes systematically. The
automatic method is the preferred procedure for upgrading software on nodes. However, you
can also upgrade each node manually.
Upgrading the IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node using FSM
Use the IBM FSM to update the firmware and software for IBM Flex System V7000 Storage
Node.
Note: The IBM FSM does not support updating hard disk drives on IBM Flex System
V7000 Storage Node. Information about updating hard disk drives is available at the
following website:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/flexsys/information/index.jsp?topic=%2
Fcom.ibm.acc.4939.doc%2Ftbrd_upgradedrivefirmware.html
For more information about updating IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node from the IBM
FSM, see the following website:
http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/systems/support/system_x_pdf/ibm_updatin
g_flex_best_practice_v1.2.1.pdf
Note: The amount of time can vary depending on the amount of preparation work required
and the size of the environment. Generally, allow slightly over 1 hour at least for an
upgrade.
