Removing the water pump

1. Remove the water pump assembly, shift
rod assembly, oil seal housing assembly.
See "Removing the water pump and shift
rod" (8-46).
Measuring the forward gear backlash
before disassembly
1. Set the gear shift in "N" position.

Shift rod push arm 1: 90890-06052
2. Install the special service tool and tem-
porarily tighten the center bolt.
Bearing housing puller claw L 2:
90890-06502
Stopper guide plate 3: 90890-06501
Center bolt 4: 90890-06504
3. Turn the lower unit so that the propeller
shaft is pointing downward.
4. Turn the drive shaft 10 times or more to
seat the taper roller bearing.
5. Tighten the center bolt 4 to the specified
torque while holding the drive shaft not to
turn.

Center bolt 4 (shimming):
5 N·m(0.5 kgf·m, 3.7 ft·lb)
6. Turn the lower unit upright.
7. Install the special service tool 5 onto the
drive shaft at the lowest possible position
where the shaft diameter is 18 mm (0.71
in).
8. Install the special service tool 6 so that
it sits on the step at the position a on the
drive shaft, and then tighten the nuts b
temporarily.

Backlash indicator 5: 90890-06706
Handle stopper 6: EU0-23814-30
9. Install the special service tools 7, 8, 9,
and put another special service tool 0
on the handle stopper 6 to apply load.
