d.
Operate the power chair at high speed by
operating the joystick in a high-speed profi le. The
motors should put approximately a 5 to 10 amp
load on the batteries.
e. Continue to operate the motors for 60 seconds.
Record the readings and compare them to the
following:
i. During the fi rst 5 seconds, normal voltage
drop should be approximately .5 to .6 VDC.
ii. During the remaining portion of the 60
seconds, the voltage should stabilize, dropping
no more than an additional .1 to .2 VDC.
iii. At the end of the 60 seconds, release the
joystick.
f. At the end of a 5 minute rest, note the voltage
recorded on the Multimeter. Normal indication at
the end of a 5 minute rest is typically the starting
voltage, or no more than .1 VDC less.
Notes:
A rapid drop of approximately 1.5 or more during the fi rst 5 seconds indicates a shorted cell
in one or both of the batteries. The battery terminals should be checked to ensure that they are
tight and clean, and then the test should be repeated. If the terminals are tight, the batteries
should be replaced. Refer to Battery Removal section of this manual.
A slow drop of more than .8 volts during the fi rst few seconds indicates a weakened pair
of batteries. Evaluate the age of the batteries and the use they have received, and consider
replacing them.
If the voltage does not return to .1 VDC of the starting voltage at the end of the 5 minute
test, evaluate the age of the batteries and the use they have received, and consider replacing
them.
