The ASTERISK key is used to tell the computer to
multiply
numbers.
In everyday writing, we use
the letter

to represent
multiplication.
But a
computer can 't tell whether we want
x
to
represent a letter or multiplication
.
So the com

puter uses the asterisk for multiplication
instead.
