Two-Line Phone System
Atwo-line phonesystem is nothingmorethantwoseparatephonenumberson
thesamewalloutlet.Thetwophonenumberscanbe onseparatejacks(RJ11)or
combined intoone jack
(RJ14).
Yourfaxmachinemustbepluggedinto
an RJ11
jack. RJll
andRJ14jacksmaybeequal in sizeand appearance and bothmay
contain4 wires(black, r ed,green,yellow). T otestthetypeofjack,plugin a
two-line phoneandseeif itcan accessbothlines.Ifit can,youmustseparatethe
lineforyourfaxmachine.
Converting Telephone Wall Outlets
Therearethreeways to convert t o an RJ11receptacle. Thefirsttwowaysmay
requireassistance fromthetelephone company. Youcan changethewalloutlets
from
one RJ14
jackto two
RJll jacks. Or,
youcanhave
an RJll
walloutlet
installedand slaveor jumpone ofthephonenumberstoit.
Thethirdwayisthe easiest: B uya triplexadapter. Y oucanpluga triplexadapter
into an RJ14 outlet.It separates t he wiresintotwoseparateRJll jacks(Line1,
Line2) and a thirdRJ14jack(Lines1 and 2).PlugthefaxmachineintoLine2
ofthe triplexadapter.

Installing Fax Machine, Two.Line TAD,
and Two-Line Telephone
When you are installing a two-linetelephone answeringdevice(TAD)and a two-
line telephone,your fax machine must be isolatedon one line at both the wall
jack and at the TAD. T he most common connection is to put the fax machine on
Line2. The back of the two-lineTAD must have twotelephone jacks:one labeled
L1or L1/L2,and the other labeledL2.You will need at leastthree telephone line
cords,the one that came with your fax machine and twofor your two-lineTAD.
Youwill need a fourth linecord ifyou add a two-line telephone.
