About Fax Machines
If you're a first-time fax machine user, fax operation might seem a little
mysterious. You'll soon get used to the unusual fax tones on your phone line, and
be able send and receive faxes easily.
Fax Tones and Handshake
Whensomeoneissendinga fax,thefaxmachinesendsfaxcalling tones,(CNG
tones)-- soft,intennittent b eepsat 4-second intervals. Y ou'llhearthemwhen
youdialand press_, and theycontinuefor30seconds afterdialing.During
that time,thesendingmachinemustbeginthe"handshake"withthe receiving
machine.Eachtimeyouuseautomaticprocedures t o senda fax,youaresending
CNG tonesoverthephoneline.You'll s oonlearntolistenforthesesoftbeeps each
timeyouanswer a phoneonyourfaxline,soyoucan knowif youarereceiving a
faxmessage.
Thereceiving faxresponds w ithfaxreceiving tones-- loud,chirpingsounds.A
receiving faxchirpsfor40seconds overthephoneline,andthe screendisplays
"RECEIVE." Ifyourmachineissetto theFAX ONLY M ode, i twillanswerevery call
automatically w ithfaxreceiving tones.Even fftheotherpartyhangsup,yourfax
machinecontinuesto sendthe "chirps"for40seconds, a nd the screencontinues
to display"RECEIVE." Tocancelthe receiving mode,press[_i_.
Whenyourfaxmachineisin FAX/TEL (F/T),it answers w itha shortbeep.After
this beep,the faxmachinelistensfor CNG tones,and thenresponds withreceiving
tones.
Thefax"handshake"isthetimein whichthe sendingmachine'sCNG tonesand
the receiving machines"chirps"overlap. T hismustbe forat leasttwoto four
seconds, s o the faxmachinescanunderstandhoweachissendingand receiving
thefax.Thehandshake cannotbeginuntilthecall isanswered, a nd theCNG
tonesonlylastfor 30seconds afterthenumberisdialed.Therefore, it'simportant
for thereceiving machineto answerthecall in asfewringsaspossible.
When youhave a telephoneansweringdevice(TAD) on yourfax line,yourTAD will
determine the number of ringsbeforethe call is answered.Pay specialattention to
the directionsin the Installation chapter
for
connectinga TAD to your fax machine.
