Known Issues
OpenVMS, Alpha and Fibre Channel Target Device
A problem has been reported when installing OpenVMS on certain Alpha
Platforms if the target device is a Fibre Channel disk.
Scenario
When booting an Alpha Server through a DS-KGPSA-CA (3.82a1) Fibre Channel
adapter that is connected to a SAN Switch 2/32 or Core Switch 2/64 with
firmware V4.0.2b, the Fibre Channel target device may not be configured. This
problem does not occur on all Alpha Servers.
Workaround
If the target device is not seen during the installation, exit Option 1 by typing
<Ctrl>C. This will return you to the installation main menu, to allow you to
perform step 2 through step 5.
1. Boot the OpenVMS installation CD from SRM console as described in the
2. Select option 7 from the installation menu. This will take you to the DCL
3. Issue the following command to configure the target device.
4. Verify the Fibre Channel target device is configured and available.
58
If a 1 Gbps signal is received and the speed negotiation is transmitting at 2
Gbps, a larger error count displays. If the portSpeed and N-port device are
configured to 2 Gbps, encoding out errors are minimal. Similarly, if the
portSpeed and N-port device are configured to 1 Gbps, encoding out errors are
minimal.
If auto-negotiation is set, the potential error count can be large and cause the
link to take longer to initialize. The large error count does not cause data
integrity problems since all errors that occur during link initialization are
counted, but no data is allowed to be transferred by the switch port until after
auto-negotiation is complete.
