Media Management

There are no specific media tasks that must be carried out before you run the first backup job. As long as
you have loaded valid media, Data Protector Express will automatically use it.
Media is invalid if it has been used by another backup product, is dirty or has been corrupted.
Similarly, if you are restoring data from media that is already within the Data Protector Express catalog,
there are no media management tasks. However, if you are restoring media from a different domain, you
must first import it so that Data Protector Express can add the media object to the database and associate
all data objects on the tape with that media object.
For a detailed description of all media management jobs, please refer to the relevant section of this guide.
This section describes the following media management jobs that are appropriate to tape libraries:
Import Media, used to add media to the catalog (this job applies to all devices, not just tape libraries).
Sort Media, used to sort the media in a library.
Insert Media, used to identify media that has been loaded into a mail slot.
Remove Media, used to identify media that is to be removed from a mail slot.
Each piece of media has two elements; the media object record which is its unique identity within the
Data Protector Express catalog and the data objects associated with it. Data Protector Express cannot do
any processing with the data objects, if the media object record has been deleted from the catalog, is
corrupted or missing. The Import Media job creates a record for the media object in the catalog and
associates the data objects on the media with that record. You must run this job if you are restoring data
that was backed up on a server on a different domain or if you are restoring data on a media that has been
deleted from the catalog. The media must be in Data Protector Express format for this job to run
successfully.
When you create the job, you can specify which slots should contain the imported media and any
password and encryption details.
If the media has been encrypted, you will only be able to use it if you can provide the encryption
passphrase. Please also note that this type of import job is not used for the mail slot, there is a separate
insert/remove media wizard for these procedures
This job physically sorts media in the library by either barcode or media name. It requires at least one
empty slot in the library so that it can move the tape cartridges.
This job is used to load media from a mail slot. Data Protector Express will read any barcode or MIC
(memory in cartridge, see page 156) information so that it can match the media to a record in its catalog
and make it available for other jobs. If you use the tape library front panel to load media into the mail slot,
Data Protector Express must first carry out a full inventory to be able to identify the media.
