Investment protection for customers who have skills in xSeries (or other PC
hardware).
Provides a cost-effective alternative for customers who need to invest in
large-scale Linux/UNIX® systems and would have traditionally considered a
mini or mainframe solution.
Partitioning is invisible to the operating system and therefore does not require
special installation techniques or configuration from a software point of view. The
operating system is only required on the primary node (Node 1), which means
simple but effective management.
At the time of writing the x455 supported hardware partitioning only. Software
partitioning using products such as those from VMware were not supported.
2.2.1 RXE-100 Expansion Enclosure
The RXE-100 forms part of IBM's XpandOnDemand technology and allows
customers to expand their PCI-X I/O capability as demands increase. With the
option to purchase a "6 pack" or "12 pack" of PCI-X slots and to share one
RXE-100 between two servers, this provided a flexible and cost-effective
solution.

2.3 Operating system support

The x455 will only support 64-bit operating systems. Microsoft and most of the
Linux vendors have invested a great deal of time and effort in producing 64-bit
versions of their operating systems. At the launch of the x455 the following
operating systems are expected to be ready immediately or within three months.
