Booting from ServeRAID
It is possible to boot from a ServeRAID adapter. To do this consult the server's
Installation Guide, as this involves the removal and installation of a number of
parts. Below are the basic steps.
1. Power off the machine.
2. An internal short SCSI cable will be attached from the back plane of the
internal drives to a connector on the planar. An internal long SCSI cable is
shipped with the machine. It will be disconnected at both ends.
3. Disconnect both ends of the short SCSI cable and store it in a safe place.
4. Connect one end of the long SCSI cable to the back plane of the internal
drives.
5. Connect the other end of the long SCSI cable to the ServeRAID adapter.
6. Ensure that all cable are neat and tidy and power back on the machine.
7. When the machine boots, configure the RAID arrays and reboot.
8. The disks will now be available for the load of the operating system.
Note: Until the arrays are configured and online EFI and EFI tools will not
recognize the presence of the disk(s). Only the ServeRAID 4Mx and 6M are
supported. Earlier ServeRAID cards are not supported.
Notes on the use of a ServeRAID adapter
Some things to note are:
When the ServeRAID CD is in the drive it may not load by choosing the CD
option from the EFI Firmware Boot Manager. If it does not, then select EFI
Shell [Built-in] and this should automatically load the CD. It is not clear why
this happens. This behavior only affects the ServeRAID 6.10 CD.
