A processor that supports a 64-bit address space may provide access to
in-memory databases that range from tens of Gigabytes to thousands of
Terabytes. In contrast, traditional 32-bit processors most often only address a
maximum of 4 GB.
Multiple databases that required large amounts of memory and previously had to
be distributed across several machines can now be consolidated onto fewer
machines, taking advantage of the larger addressable linear address space.
Key database software available for Itanium 2 systems include:
IBM DB2® Universal Database™ 8.1 (both Linux and Windows versions)
Microsoft SQL Server 2000
Oracle 9i Database (Linux/Windows)
IBM DB2 Universal Database
The DB2 Universal Database offers increased performance, reliability, and
scalability on Windows and Linux platforms by exploiting the IA-64 servers built
around the Itanium Processor Family of chips from Intel. The 64-bit version of
DB2 delivers significantly higher levels of performance and reliability by exploiting
the capabilities of the new systems.
As the adoption of IA-64 architecture continues to move forward with most major
server system OEMs using Windows and Linux operating systems, IBM DB2
Universal Database leads the software industry in providing business database
application content to the IA-64 server platform. IBM DB2 Universal Database is
currently enabling the most robust and varied database software application
performance on the IA-64 architecture.
By investing in IBM DB2 Universal Database application software designed for
the IA-64 architecture, starting with the Itanium microprocessor, companies will
be assured of having a solid foundation for their electronic business far into the
future.
Client/server configurations supported in this release are:
64-bit client to 64-bit DB2 UDB engine
64-bit client to 64-bit DB2 Connect™ gateway to DRDA® host
64-bit DB2 Connect Personal Edition to DRDA host

2.7.2 Business logic

More and more enterprise applications such as ERP, SCM, CRM, and BI are
released or announced to be released on a 64-bit platform. Such applications
