Administering F-Secure Anti-Virus for Internet Gateways
File type recognition
Note that other scanning settings have an effect on the use of File Type
Recognition. Even if the File Type Recognition is turned on, it is used only
when the file would not be scanned because of its content type. For
example, if you configure F-Secure Anti-Virus for Internet Gateways to
scan only included content types, and the file to be scanned matches the
list of included content types, the File Type Recognition is not utilized as
the file is scanned anyway.
When the file to be scanned does not match the list of content types
which should be scanned, the File Type Recognition analyzes the file. For
example, if the file to be scanned has audio/wav content type, which does
not belong to the list of included content types, the File Type Recognition
analyzes the content, which could reveal the real content type to be
application/octet-stream, and so the file will be scanned.
File Type Recognition does not check files that are in archives, because
this would seriously degrade the system performance.
If you set F-Secure Internet Gateways to scan all content types, the File
Type Recognition is not needed so it is disabled automatically. For more

The Intelligent File Type Recognition allows
to recognize a legitimate file type and to spot
unsafe content coming with safe filename
extensions (for example, a MS Word
document with .RTF extension.)
