(depending on current regulations in your country, and your conditions of usage).
WARNING: your intensity of use may cause you to inspect your PPE more frequently.
Follow the procedures described at Petzl.com. Record the results on your PPE inspection
form: type, model, manufacturer contact info, serial number or individual number, dates:
manufacture, purchase, first use, next periodic inspection; problems, comments, inspector's
name and signature.
Before each use
Check the webbing at the attachment points, at the adjustment buckles and at the safety
stitching. Be particularly careful to check for cut or loose threads.
Look for cuts, wear and damage due to, for example, use, heat, chemicals. Verify that the
DOUBLEBACK and FAST buckles function properly.
Check the fall-arrest visual indicator. The indicator shows red if the dorsal attachment point
sustains a shock load greater than 400 daN. Retire the harness if the fall-arrest visual indicator
is visible.
Gated ventral attachment point
Verify the absence of deformation, cracks, marks, wear, corrosion. Verify that the screws are
present. Verify that the screws are correctly tightened (e.g. correct installation, lack of play).
CROLL L
Verify the absence of deformation, cracks, marks, wear, corrosion.
Check the condition of the frame, the attachment holes, the cam, the safety catch, the springs
and the cam axle. Check the mobility of the cam and the effectiveness of its spring. Verify that
the cam's teeth are not dirty.
During use
Regularly verify that the adjustment buckles are properly tightened.
It is important to regularly monitor the condition of the product and its connections to the other
equipment in the system. Make sure that all items of equipment are correctly positioned with
respect to each other.
4. Compatibility
This product is part of a safety system. Verify that this product is compatible with the other
equipment used with it.
Equipment used with your harness must meet current standards in your country (e.g. EN 362
connectors).
5. Harness setup and donning
- Be sure to correctly stow the excess webbing (folded flat) in the elastic keepers.
- Beware of foreign objects (e.g. pebbles, sand, clothing) that could impede the operation of
the FAST buckles. Verify that they are correctly fastened (see diagrams).
Gated ventral attachment point
This point allows multiple pieces of equipment to be attached. The two screws must be
present. To ensure proper performance of your device, the screws must be correctly installed
and tightened to the indicated torque. Using a torque wrench is the only way to verify that the
tightening torque is correct.
Carefully follow the instructions for assembly and disassembly: see indicative arrows. It is not
necessary to completely remove the screw to free the pin. If you lose a screw, contact Petzl
after-sales service.
Initial adjustment of the dorsal attachment point
Adjust the position of the dorsal attachment point to suit your body type and size: position it at
the level of the shoulder blades.
Adjustment and suspension test
Your harness must be adjusted to fit snugly to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a fall.
In a safe environment, you must move around and hang in the harness from each attachment
point, with your equipment, to verify that the harness fits properly, provides adequate comfort
for the intended use, and that it is optimally adjusted.
6. Attachment points
6a. Sternal attachment point
Attachment point for a fall-arrest system or ladder-climbing system.
6b. Dorsal attachment point
Attachment point for a fall-arrest system.
6c. Ventral attachment point (large D)
Attachment point for a progression or positioning system.
6d. Lanyard attachment point
Attachment point designed for attaching a positioning lanyard.
6e. Waistbelt side attachment points
The two waistbelt side attachment points must be used together to connect a positioning
lanyard.
The lanyard between the user and the anchor must be kept taut.
6f. Rear restraint attachment point
This rear waistbelt attachment point is designed only for attachment of a restraint system to
prevent the user from entering an area where a fall is possible.
6g. Ventral attachment point (small D)
Intended primarily for connecting the CROLL to the sit harness, this point may also be used for
connecting an auxiliary progression or positioning system.
7. Clearance: amount of free space below the
user
The free space below the user must be sufficient to prevent the user from hitting an obstacle
in the event of a fall. Specific details on calculating clearance are found in the Instructions for
Use of the other components (in particular energy absorbers and mobile fall arresters). In a
fall, the dorsal fall-arrest attachment point elongates (45 cm). This elongation must be taken
into account for the clearance calculation. For the clearance calculation, take into account the
length of any connectors that will have an effect on the fall distance.
TECHNICAL NOTICE ASTRO INT
8. EN 361: 2002 standard
Only the EN 361 attachment points are to be used for connecting a fall-arrest system, for
example a mobile fall arrester, an energy absorber. For ease of identification, these points are
marked with the letter 'A'.
9. CSA Z259.10-18 standard
Only the class A dorsal attachment point is designed to support the user in the event of a fall.
The class L sternal attachment points, for ladder-climbing, are designed for use with fall
limitation systems, consisting of a fall-arrest system on a vertical lifeline, in accordance with the
CAN/CSA-Z259.2.1 standard.
The class D attachment points are designed for suspension and controlled descent.
10. EN 358: 2018 standard
Belt for work positioning and restraint.
Approved for one user, including their tools and equipment, for a maximum total weight of 150
kg. The EN 358 attachment points must only be used to attach to a work positioning system
or to a restraint system. Install or adjust the lanyard so that it stays taut. A work positioning
belt must not be used for fall arrest, nor if there is a foreseeable risk of the user becoming
suspended or exposed to uncontrolled tension on the belt.
11. EN 813: 2008 standard
Sit harness designed for progression on rope and work positioning.
Nominal maximum load: 140 kg.
Use the EN 813 attachment points to attach, for example, a descender, positioning lanyards,
a progression system.
A sit harness is not suitable for fall arrest.
12. CROLL L ventral rope clamp
The CROLL L is an EN 12841: 2006 type B rope adjustment device used for upward
progression on the work rope.
The CROLL L must be used with a type A backup device on the safety rope (e.g. with an
ASAP mobile fall arrester for rope).
Nominal maximum load: 140 kg.
- The CROLL L is not suitable for use in a fall-arrest system.
- To meet the requirements of the EN 12841: 2006 type B standard, use 10-13 mm EN 1891
type A low stretch kernmantle ropes. (Note: Certification testing was performed using Petzl
CLUB 10 mm and Teufelberger KM III 13 mm ropes.)
- The CROLL is only to be used when it is connected directly to the harness, without a lanyard.
Use a connecting assembly with a maximum length of 15 cm.
- To reduce the risk of a fall, keep the rope between the rope adjustment device and the
anchor as taut and as vertical as possible.
- When the full weight of the user is on the safety rope, it becomes a work rope and so must
be used with another safety rope.
- When your body weight is on the work rope, make sure that the safety rope is not loaded.
- A dynamic overload can damage the safety rope.
Function principle and test
The CROLL slides along the rope in one direction and blocks in the other direction. The cam's
teeth initiate a clamping action that blocks the rope by pinching it between the cam and the
frame.
Installing and removing the rope
Pull the safety catch down and lock it on the frame of the device. The cam is thus held open.
Put the rope in the device. Install in the correct direction ("UP" arrow). Release the safety catch
so that the cam presses against the rope. In this position, the safety catch helps prevent
involuntary opening of the cam. To remove the rope, slide the device upwards on the rope
while operating the safety catch to disengage the cam.
Ascending a rope
Use the CROLL L with another rope clamp (e.g. BASIC) and a foot loop. Always attach yourself
to the second rope clamp with an appropriate lanyard.
13. Connecting the seat
The seat attachment points allow shackles to be attached for carabiner-free installation of a
PODIUM or LITEPOD seat (or any other seat, with carabiners).
14. Equipment loops
Equipment loops must only be used for equipment.
WARNING - DANGER: never use equipment loops for belaying, rappelling, tying in, or
anchoring a person.
The removable Velcro keeper may be placed on the right or left shoulder strap. It can be used
to hold your mobile fall arrester's energy absorber in a high position.
15. Fall-arrest lanyard connector parking
A. To be used only as lanyard connector parking for unused lanyard ends.
B. In the event of a fall, the lanyard connector parking releases the lanyard-end connector, to
avoid impeding deployment of the energy absorber.
WARNING: this is not a fall-arrest attachment point.
