Introduction

The Axon Fleet 3 wireless microphone is a hardware solution for audio capture outside of the Fleet 3equipped vehicle where Axon Body Worn Cameras have not been deployed. The charge base is mounted in the vehicle, connected to the hub via Ethernet, and handles all charging and data needs for the Wireless mic while docked. The charge base also facilitates all pairing and audio communication to the microphone while in use. The Axon Fleet 3 Hub can support up to two wireless microphones and two charge bases per vehicle.

Wireless microphone performance:

  • The wireless microphone has a range of 1,000 ft (300 m) with unobstructed line-of-sight and at least 500 ft (150 m) with a person and vehicle obstruction.
  • When fully charged, the wireless microphone lasts 12 hours. When inserted in the charging base, a wireless microphone recharges to 85% within 90 minutes.
  • wireless microphone uses the Axon RAPIDLOCK mounting solution, sharing all the same mounting configurations as Axon Body Worn cameras.
  • The wireless microphone is shipped with an optional lapel microphone, which provides superior audio capture quality and wind noise cancellation.

Operation

Charge the battery

A fully charged Axon Fleet 3 wireless microphone battery has enough power for approximately 14 hours of normal operation. Charge your microphone for a minimum of 1.5 hours after a typical 12-hour shift. Charge the microphone by docking it in its charging base. Operational thermal limits for charging are 41– 104 ⁰F (5–40 ⁰C). No audio is recorded while the mic is docked.
Operation - Charge the battery

Charging status

While docked, the wireless microphone's top and front Status LEDs show information on the charge level. The LEDs display as yellow when below 100% charge and green at full charge.

Pair the microphone

The first time the wireless microphone is docked in a charging base, it enters the pairing process. Once paired, the microphone automatically reconnects when:

  • The wireless microphone goes out of range and comes back in range.
  • The wireless microphone is powered off and then powered back on.
  • Pairing reoccurs if the wireless microphone is placed in a different charging base. When this happens, it loses pairing with its original charging base and becomes paired with its new charging base.

For simplicity, pairing and re-connection have the same experience:

  • Pairing Process – Screen displays PAIRING and the LED is white .
  • Successful Pairing and Connection – Screen displays READY and the LED shows the charge level (if docked) or the recording status (if undocked).
    Operation - Pair the microphone

Firmware updates

Firmware updates for the Axon Fleet 3 wireless microphone and charging base are executed through the Fleet Dashboard application.

Confirm microphone readiness with Fleet Dashboard

A wireless microphone ready indicator displays on Fleet 3 Dashboard's camera view tab. The Front 1x tile has iconography on the top left that shows when a wireless microphone charging base is plugged into the Fleet 3 Hub. It has one of two states:

  • MIC ON – Indicates the wireless microphone is paired and undocked from the CB. All evidence capture use the wireless microphone for evidence capture.
  • MIC OFF – Indicates the wireless microphone is not paired or available to record audio.
Confirm microphone readiness with Fleet Dashboard

Evidence review in Dashboard

The Axon Fleet Dashboard application Evidence Review tab supports the playback of video evidence. When playing front camera evidence files recorded with a wireless microphone, only the microphone audio plays in the application. The front camera audio stream is available in Axon Evidence.

For vehicles with two wireless microphones installed, by default, the only available audio playback within the Dashboard application comes from the microphone paired to the charging base with the lower serial number (of the two charging bases in the vehicle).

Axon Evidence review

Evidence created with Fleet 3 wireless microphones attached contains additional audio tracks. This evidence is saved in MP4 format and contains the Front camera audio as an audio track, as well as one additional audio track for each wireless microphone connected to the Fleet 3 Hub. Wireless microphone audio becomes the default audio track that is used during video playback in Axon Evidence.

Axon Evidence has an audio track selection button, which enables toggling between audio sources during video playback.

Installation

Unbox and separate all Fleet 3 wireless microphone components: charging base, microphone, ethernet cable, lapel microphone, windshield antenna, microphone mount.
Installation - Step 1

Included mounting hardware for charging base:

  • (5) Self-drilling #8 x ¾ screws
  • (5) 8/32".50 in, pan head Phillips screw
  • (5) 8/32", hex nut
  • Alcohol prep wipe
  1. Identify a mounting surface and location for the charging base. Ideal locations are on the foreside of the prisoner partition adjacent to the driver's seat, or on the side of the console. To reduce inadvertent bodily contact with the charging base, it may be prudent to mount the single charging base on the passenger side of the console. Affix the charging base to the surface using either the provided nut and bolt or the self-tapping screws.
Exercise caution before drilling pilot holes or screwing in the self-taping screws: ensure the surroundings are properly evaluated and you know what lies behind the mounting surface.
    Installation - Step 2
  2. Attach the windshield antenna SMA connector to the side of the charging base. Use a 4 in/lb.
Torque wrench to connect the antenna. If the connector is over-torqued, it may begin to spin.
    Installation - Step 3
  3. Use the alcohol preparation wipe to clean the glass surface the antenna is being mounted to. Wipe the area with a clean, dry cloth. Mount the antenna to the windshield to ensure maximum range and optimal performance of the wireless microphone.
    Installation - Step 4
  4. Connect the charging base ethernet pigtail to the hub using the provided ethernet cable. Secure the pigtail and ethernet cable together using the provided ethernet pigtail splints. Refer to the Fleet 3 installation guide on proper installation procedure for splint application
  5. Power on the Fleet 3 system with the wireless microphone docked. The microphone enters PAIRING status, before transitioning shortly thereafter to READY status.
  6. Undock the microphone and double press Event on the front of the device. Ensure the Fleet 3 front camera begins recording. This confirms the installation is successful and the communication protocols are functional.

Troubleshooting

Any error states encountered with the wireless microphone and/or charging base can typically be cleared by restarting the devices.

To restart the wireless microphone: press Power for several seconds until it turns off, wait 12–15 seconds, then press Power again for a few seconds to restart.
