saved with an Excel file.). Enterprise environments that have a unidrv.dll version older than the
version packaged in the HP UPD may experience the symptoms defined in the Microsoft articles.
Administrators should identify the unidrv.dll or pscript5.dll version installed on the target
host's \windows\system32\spool\drivers\*\3 directory, compare to the HP UPD Version
History table in this release note, and create appropriate testing and deployment plans specific to the
installation environment.

HP UPD Supported Upgrades

HP will support upgrading from one version of the HP UPD to a newer version of the HP UPD,
starting with v4.5. Upgrading from a non HP Universal Print Driver to the HP Universal Print Driver,
regardless of version or vendor, is not supported. For supported environments, customer's should
proceed with steps for new printer installation.
Change from Unidrv v5 to Unidrv6: Current HP product specific printer drivers and HP UPD rely on
the UNIDRV.DLL or PSCRIPT5.DLL files supplied by Microsoft. On March 8, 2007, Microsoft updated
their UNIDRV.DLL and PSCRIPT5.DLL files from v5.xxx to v6.xxx and as a consequence has caused
changes in the structure of DEVMODE tables within UNIDRV or PSCRIPT based drivers.
When switching from older HP printer drivers prior to v61.74.xx.xx (prior to HP UPD 4.5) to newer
versions, many customers have noticed that the paper type has changed from Unspecified to Plain
or Heavy Media (others types also reported). For example, this could be seen in an upgrade from
HP UPD v4.1 to v5.0. The paper type change is caused by a mismatch in the DevMode structures of
the old driver and the new driver. HP printer drivers with file versions prior to 61 .074.xx.xx* were built
with the Microsoft version 5 files, while HP drivers with file versions of 61.074.xx.xx* or later were built
with the Microsoft version 6 files. All supported releases of the HP UPD utilize v6 files. For this
reason, upgrading from v5.xxx to v6.xxx is not supported. To work around this issue, first delete the
existing printer and driver, install a v61.74.xxx or newer driver, then create a new printer.
Environments that experience the symptoms from the change in v5 to v6 unidrv.dll will need to reset
the DevMode structure. Assuming HP UPD v4.5 or higher installation on a server or client, the
solution is to delete the old HP printer name and the existing HP printer and driver on both the server
and all connecting clients (see System Admin Guide, Uninstall the HP UPD). Next, recreate the
printer on the server. Point and print clients will need to delete the printer and reestablish the
connection to the print server. When the printer is recreated with a v61.74.xxx driver (or newer),
Windows will create new DevMode structures that match the v6.xxx architecture for new printer.
There is no need to delete and replace the ports associated with the deleted printer.
For enterprise deployments requiring tools support of this process, please reference the HP Printer
Administrator´s Resource Kit to test with the PRNCON tool (see the Release Notes for this
HP unsupported tool).

heading to download the PARK zip file.
