MCLS2-CUSTOM 4-Channel Laser/SLD Source
Chapter 1
Introduction
Intended Use
This product is intended to be used as multi-channel fiber coupled laser/superluminescent diode (SLD) source
containing laser and/or SLD light sources, for use in a laboratory environment. The part is designed to interface
with modulating sources as inputs and fiber patch cable outputs. It can be operated through the front panel and
touchscreen or connected to a PC via USB port for GUI or serial command control.
Explanation of Safety Warnings
Warning indicates a hazard with a medium level of risk that, if not avoided, could result in
death or serious injury.
Caution indicates a hazard with a low level of risk that, if not avoided, could result in minor
or moderate injury.
Indicates information considered important, but not hazard-related, such as possible
damage to the product.
Danger, Warning, or Caution
Laser Radiation Warning
Shock Warning
The CE/UKCA markings on the product are the manufacturer's declaration that the product
complies with the essential requirements of the relevant European health, safety, and
environmental protection legislation.
The symbol on the product, the accessories or packaging indicates that this device must not be treated
as unsorted municipal waste but must be collected separately.
Description
Thorlabs' MCLS2-CUSTOM Multi-Channel Laser/SLD Source provides an easy interface for multiple fiber-coupled
laser diode and/or superluminescent diode (SLD) sources. Each system is equipped with up to four fiber output
light sources with wavelengths available from 406 nm to 2000 nm. The MCLS2-CUSTOM base is configured to
accept a wide range of fiber pigtailed laser diodes and SLDs including sources with single mode, multimode, or PM
fiber. Please visit our website for a full list of currently available wavelength options. Please refer to the web
presentation to configure your laser or SLD system.
Each light source operates from an independent, high-precision, low-noise, constant-current source, and
temperature control unit. An intuitive touchscreen interface allows the user to view and set the parameters for
each laser or SLD. The user can adjust the light source percent output (zero to max power) and temperature
control independently for each channel. The display indicates the channel numbers, light source name, the set
percent output value and limits, the set or read temperature of the laser or SLD cold block, and the output
wavelength of each of the sources.
This device includes a microcontroller to fully control all the light sources' optical power and temperature, as well
as monitor the system for fault conditions. The USB connector on the back panel allows communication with a PC
using a GUI or a command line language (see section 5.9 on page 10). On the rear panel, analog inputs are available
