Ch e ck ing and Filling
- If your skin has come in contact with the en-
gine oil, you must subsequently cleanse it
thoroughly .

- Audi does not recommend the use of o il
addit ives. They may damage the eng ine

For the sake of the environment
- Under no circumstances can the oil come in
contact with the sewage network or the soil.
- Observe and follow legal regulations when
dispos ing of empty oil conta iners.
Changing the engine oil
We recommend tha t have your oil changed by an
authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service s ta-
tion.
Before you check anyth ing in the engine compart-
ment,
alway s read and heed all WARNINGS¢ .&
in Working in the engine compartment on
page 193 .
The engine oil must be changed according to the
intervals specif ied in your Warranty
&
Mainte-
nance booklet. This is very important because the
lubricat ing propert ies of oil diminish gradually
du ring normal vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the engine oil should
be changed more frequently . Change oil more of-
ten if you drive mostly short distances, operate
the vehicle in dusty areas or under predominant ly
stop-and-go traffic condit ions, or have your vehi-
cle where temperat ures remain below freezing
for extended periods.
Detergent addi t ives in the oil will make fresh oil
loo k dark afte r t he engine has been ru nni ng fo r a
short t ime. This is norma l and is not a reason t o
change the oil more oft en t han recommended.

Because of the problem of prope r disposa l, along
with the special too ls and necessary expertise re-
quired, we strongly recommend that you have
yo ur oi l changed by an authori zed
Audi deale r
or
a qual ified service station.
If you choose to change you r oil yourself ,
please
note the fo ll ow ing important information:

WARNING
To reduce the risk of persona l injury if you
must change the engine oil in your vehicle
yourself:
- Wea r eye protect ion.
- To reduce the risk of burns from hot engine
oil, let the engine cool down to the touch.

- W hen removin g the oil drain plug with your
fingers, stay as f ar away as possible. Always
keep your forearm parallel to the gro und to
help prevent hot oil from run ning down your
arm .
- Drain the oil into a container designed for
this purpose, one large enough to hold at
least the t ota l amount of oi l in you r engine.
- Engine oil is poisonous. Keep it well out of
the reach of childre n.
- Continuous contact with used engine oil is
harmf ul to your skin . Always protect your
skin by washi ng oil off thoroughly with soap
and wate r.

Note
Never mix oil additives with your engine oil.
These additives can damage your engine and
adversely affect your Audi Limi ted New Vehi-
cle Warranty .

- Before changing your oi l, first make sure
you know where you can properly dispose of
the used oil.
- Always dispose of used engine oil pro perly .
Do not dump it on garden soil, wooded
areas, into open streams or down sewage
drains.
- Recycle used engine oil by tak ing it t o a used
engine oil collect ion fac il ity in yo ur area, or
cont act a service st ation.
