and depress the accelerator. The parking brake
stays applied and prevents the vehicle from
roll ing backward .

You can re lease the switch @ once you are sure
t hat you a re deve loping enough driving for ce at
the wheels by depressing the accelerator.
Depending on the weight of the rig (vehicle and
tra ile r) and the seve rity of t he incline, you may
roll backwards as you start. You can prevent roll-
ing backwards by holding the parking brake
switch ® pulled out and acce lerating - just as
you would when starting on a hill with a conven-
tional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system
fails or locks.
11-
In an emergency, pull the sw itch @

and continue to pull it to slow your vehi-
cle down with the parking brake.
11-
As soon as you release the switch ® or acce ler-
ate, the brak ing process stops.
If you pull the switch ® and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergency
braking function is initiated. The vehicle is braked
at all four wheels by activating the hydrau lic
brake system . The brake performance is sim ilar
to making an emergency stop ¢ ,& .
In order not to activate the emergency brak ing by
mistake, an audib le warning tone (bu zzer)
sounds when the sw itch ® is pulled . As soon as
the sw itch ® is released, or the accelerator pedal
is depressed, emergency braking stops .
A
WARNING
Emergency bra king should only be used in an
emergen cy, when the normal foot brake has
fai led or the bra ke pedal is obstructed.
Using
t he parking brake to perform emergency
braking will slow your vehicle down as if you
D r iving
had made a full brake applicat ion . The laws of
physics cannot be suspended even with ESC
and its associated components (ABS, ASR,
EDS). In corners and when road or weathe r
conditions are bad, a full brake application
can cause the vehicle to skid or the rear end to
break away - risking an acc ident.
Speed
warning
system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep your
driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warn ing system warns if the driver ex-
ceeds a previously stored maxim um speed. A
warning tone will sound as soon as the veh icle
speed exceeds the set speed by about 3 mph
(3
km/h). At the same time, a warning symbol
appears in the display . The symbol's appearance
might be different in some models.
The speed warning system has two warning
th resholds that function independently of each
other and that have somewhat different purpos-
es:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set t he maximum
speed whi le you are driving. This setting will re-
main in effect until you turn off the ignit ion, as-
suming that you have not changed or reset the
setting.
