These electron ic control modules record data
during normal vehicle operation that may be
needed by trained technicians for diagnostic and
repair purposes. The recording capability of these
modules is limited to data (no sound is record-
ed) . Only a small amount of data is actually re-
corded over a very limited per iod of t ime, or stor-
ed when a system fau lt is detected by a control
module. Some of the data stored may relate t o
vehicle speed, di rect ion, or brak ing, as well as re-
stra int system use and performance in the event
of a crash. Stored data can also only be read and
downloaded with special equipment that is di-
rect ly connected to the veh icle.

Braking
What affects braking efficiency?
New brake pads
During the firs t 250 miles (400 km), new brake
pads do not possess the ir full braking effect, t hey
have to be "bro ken in" first ¢ ,& . You can com-
pensate for this slight ly reduced braking power
by pushing harder on the brake pedal. Avoid
heavy braking loads during the break- in period .
Operating conditions and driving habits
The brakes on today's aut omobiles are st il l sub-
ject to wear, depend ing largely on operating con-
ditions and driving habits ¢ .& . On vehicles that
co
are either dr iven most ly in stop-and -go city traf -

nance booklet . Failure t o have your brake pads
inspected can result in reduced brake perform -
ance.
On steep slopes, you should use the bra king ef-
f ect of the engine. Thi s way, you prevent unnec-
essary wear on the brake system. If you must use
your bra kes, do not hold the brakes down contin -
uously. Pump the brakes at inte rvals.
Operating noise
Noises may occur when braking depending on the
speed, braking force and outside conditions such
as temperature and humidity.
Effect of water and road salt
In certa in sit uations, for examp le after drivi ng
t hrough water, in heavy rain, aft er overnight con-
densation or after washing your car, the brak ing
effect can be reduced by moisture or ice on the
bra ke rotors and brake pads. The brakes must be
dried f irst with a few carefu l brake app lications .
At higher speeds and w ith t he wi ndshield wipe rs
tu rned on, the brake pads press against the brake
rotors for a short amount of time. This occurs at
regu lar intervals without the dr iver not icing and
provides for better brake response t ime under
wet cond itions .
The effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced
when the vehicle is driven on a salt-covered road
and the brakes are not used. Likewise, you clean
off accumulated salt coat ing from brake discs
and pads with a few caut ious app lications of the
brake ¢ _&.
Corrosion
There may be a tendency for dirt to build up on
the brake pads and corrosion to form on the discs
if the car is not driven regularly or only for short
trips with little use of the brakes.
If
the brakes are not used frequent ly, or if corro-
sion has formed on the discs, it is advisable to
clean off the pads and discs by braking firmly a
few times from a moderately high speed ¢
.&.
