Checking the Protocol
A protocol is a set of commands used by your software to communicate with the printer.
There are many different protocols available for printers. Each protocol has unique features
and capabilities. This printer offers three resident protocols:
DEC PPL2
IBM Proprinter X24E (LA36N) or IBM Proprinter XL24E (LA36W)
EPSON ESC/P2
The protocol selected on the printer must match the Print Driver you selected in your
software.
Two user environments are available with your printer: Macro 1 and Macro 2. These
environments define most of the settings necessary to use your printer, including the
protocol used.

relate to Macro 2 selection.
Your printer is factory set to the Macro 1 user environment, which addresses the EPSON
ESC/P2 protocol when the parallel interface is used.
The EPSON ESC/P2 protocol is used by the Windows Print Driver delivered with your printer.
Then, when using this driver, you don't have to select a specific protocol on your printer.
Unless you work under specific DOS applications, you only need to install the printer driver
for Windows to get your printer ready for use.
Note:
See the section, "Changing Macro 1 and Macro 2 Options," in Chapter 4 of the
User Manual, if you intend to use another Printer Driver or another protocol.
