Always shift to park position j before
#
switching off the engine.
Secure against rolling away with the
#
parking brake.
* NOTE Transmission damage due to shift‐
ing at high engine speed or when the
vehicle is rolling
You can damage the automatic transmission
if you shift from h to k, from k to h or
directly to j when the engine speed is too
high or the vehicle is rolling.
Only change the transmission position
#
when the vehicle is stationary.
Depending on the transmission, the automatic
transmission switches to transmission position
j (9-speed automatic transmission) ori (7-
speed automatic transmission) when switching
off the engine. The power transmission between
the engine and transmission is interrupted in
transmission position i. In this case, shift the
automatic transmission to transmission position
j before switching off the engine when the vehi‐
cle is stationary. Observe the messages on the
multifunction display. Apply the parking brake to
prevent the vehicle from rolling away.
You use the DIRECT SELECT lever to switch the
transmission position. The current transmission
position appears in the multifunction display
(
page 192).

Depress the brake pedal and push the

DIRECT SELECT lever upwards past the first
point of resistance.
Transmission position display k is shown in
the multifunction display.

Depending on the vehicle equipment, the
maximum design speed in reverse gear is
8 km/h, 20 km/h or 60 km/h.
Selecting neutral N
& WARNING Risk of accident and injury
when neutral position engaged
The vehicle can roll away if the parking brake
is not applied and you park the vehicle with
the neutral position i engaged.
There is a risk of accident and injury.
Before parking the vehicle, apply the
#
parking brake.
Press the brake pedal and the DIRECT
#
SELECT lever upwards or downwards to the
first point of resistance.
Transmission position display i is shown in
the multifunction display.

When you switch off the engine, the 7-speed
automatic transmission automatically shifts
into neutral i.
Releasing the brake pedal will allow you to move
the vehicle freely, for example, to push it or tow
it.
If the automatic transmission should also
stay in neutral i

switched off, carry out the following:
7-speed automatic transmission: leave the

key in the ignition lock.
9-speed automatic transmission: start the

vehicle.
