In the case where (F) would be equal to 4", it is suggested that the sheet metal between the base of the
fireplace and floor be in one piece.
6.2.2 ON THE FLOOR OR ON A RAISED BASE OF LESS THAN 4" INSTALLATION (R VALUE FOR THE HEARTH
EXTENSION REQUIRED)
In the case where the fireplace is installed directly on the floor or on a raised base of less than 4", an R
value for the hearth extension is required. In these cases also, the joint between the hearth extension and
the fireplace (E) must be protected by a non-combustible material. For example, a sheet metal (not
included).
Note that the floor under of the fireplace should match or exceed the height of the floor protection.
